Members’ ECF Grades | Comparing grades with ratings
| Here are our members’ English Chess Federation longplay (or standard play) and rapidplay grades, listed according to the highest, latest available grade. An asterisk (*) indicates that no grade was published for that player for that season or period; however, do note that the ECF does occasionally change grades retrospectively. The lists below include (some) former as well as current and prospective members. | ![]() |

A few more members have been relatively inactive in the last few years, or are just starting out, and have yet to play enough recent games for an official grade.
An official ECF grade and an official FIDE Elo rating are worked out very differently; hence a direct, "accurate" conversion is not possible. However, a formula was published in the BCF Grading List 2002-2003, and that is what the calculations here are based on.
To see how a particular grade or rating (such as your own) compares according to various formulas, click the buttons below - if supported/enabled by your browser.
NB These conversions are for ECF purposes, and apply to official FIDE ratings only. A minimum FIDE rating of 2000 is assumed (a grade of 150 ECF). For further information visit the ECF website.
When JP Wilkinson carried out an empirical survey (admittedly a few years ago now) on players with both a BCF grade and an Elo rating, he came up with the conversion ratios below.
The final buttons convert USCF (United States Chess Federation) ratings to standard Elo ratings. Usually just a hundred (or more) points are deducted from the USCF figure, but that is not strictly accurate according to a formula posted by Jeroen van Dorp, which is the one used here.
